Hypothyroidism presents challenges in numerous ways.

And none are too fun. Millions of people have challenges with hypothyroidism, and many cases go undiagnosed. These conditions can impact both women and men, but women are roughly five times more likely to experience it.

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone, called thyroxine. This causes the body’s system to slow. The primary cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid to become inflamed and unable to produce the necessary amounts of thyroxine.

Symptoms

Frequently, symptoms of hypothyroidism are not clearly defined. Worse yet, they can often mimic other conditions. They may include:
  • Changes in the menstrual cycle
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Constipation
  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Dry hair and hair loss
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Dry Skin

Should these symptoms result from hypothyroidism and go untreated, a person could experience serious complications. Heart problems, infertility, joint pain, and obesity are commonly associated with hypothyroidism that has gone untreated.

In the most extreme cases, hypothyroidism can affect developing babies in pregnant women. This may result in mental problems for the developing child.

Extremely low levels of thyroxine can also cause a life-threatening condition called myxedema. Myxedema is the most severe form of the disease. A person with myxedema can lose consciousness or potentially slip into a coma. The condition can also cause the body temperature to drop extremely low, sometimes resulting in death.
